I've officially lived in Phoenix for 5 months - and let me tell ya, it is freakin' fantastic. I live in an area downtown called 'Roosevelt Row' - to many people who know the area, this place used to be a run-down, dangerous area. Now - its one of the most artistic, well-done communities with good vibes all around.
With the location being 10 minutes from the airport, and 15 minutes from hundreds of amazing hiking locations - I can't think of a better place to kick back and come home to after a long day at the hospital. The food, the music, and the art are all 10/10 on RoRo, but what really makes this neighborhood stand out - is the mindset of the people. If it was possible to combine a community of humans who are hard-working and dedicated to their trade, but have the mindset of people who live on a tropical island - this is the people of #RoRo.
You've just gotta come check it out for yourself - drift away from the typical AZ tourist destination locations, and come to one of my favorite places.
1. Rise Craft Coffee + Eatery: If my soul was a cafe - this would be it. This place does not miss a detail. The best part about it - is again the people. There isn't a more cool, artistic, talented group that could make up the staff at Rise. They're always the kindest and they radiate relaxation and positive vibes. Obviously if youre gonna go to a coffee shop/eatery, you want more than just good staff and well, they've got it - their coffee is definitely made with some extra love and their food is all local amazing goodness. Some of my favorites are their breakfast burrito and the Pavo Press. You really can't go wrong with any choice. I love to either sit inside and chat with everyone, play a board game while I sip on my coffee, or go enjoy a meal outside on their gorgeous patio - day and night. This place definitely has my heart.
2. Sutra Studios: This one isn't food for your belly - but it definitely fills your soul. Sutra isn't just any old neighborhood yoga studio - its an old abandoned building that was turned into a sanctuary for the neighborhood to practice yoga. Their vibe is essentially, ' do you' and don't care what anyone else thinks - do what feels good and makes you happy. That chill, honest vibe mixed with their fantastic teachers and cool space - make for my absolute favorite place to lie down on my mat for an hour and rejuvenate my mind.
3. Paz Cantina: This place is not only filled with all the good vibes of everywhere else, but it happens to be inside of my home - Broadstone on Roosevelt Row. Having a delicious, Mexican restaurant and nightclub on the main level of your home - is well, dangerous - but incredible. I highly recommend hanging out at Paz for a meal, to watch a game, or for any of their nightly festivities - they won't disappoint.
4. Angels Trumpet Ale House: This place will blow your mind if you like to enjoy good chicken wings. They do some magic to them for 24 hours before they're ready to eat. This in combination with any one of their brews on tap - is fantastic and will make you really, really happy.
5. The Dressing Room: another goodie. My favorite thing here though is the 'RoRo burger' - if you want the best burger in the neighborhood - this is it. They have a super cute patio and an excellent drink selection as well. Their breakfast burrito is also in a tie with that of Rise.
6. The Churchill: This one is new - its an outdoor hangout made out of old shipping containers - if that in and of itself isn't insanely cool - the Cuban-inspired drinks, live music, and delicious food options will blow you away.
7. Cobra Arcade Bar: I wish I could say that I don't love to go get a whiskey soda and play a bunch of Frogger - but I totally do. This place has every classic game you could want to play. Aside from the games, their drinks are good, the people are fun, and they usually have some good DJ action going on.
8. This one isn't a place...but First Friday in Phoenix happens on RoRo every month. This is a street event where some insanely talented individuals perform, showcase their art, and hang out together. There are hundreds of food trucks, local vendors - which have literally the best of everything - and performers that will blow you away. First Friday is something pretty special. It showcases the raw talent and soul that lives in Phoenix - it's a must do if you happen to be in town.
That's a start for your #RoRo travel guide. Branch out and experience this new culture that downtown Phoenix has to offer. It's one of a kind, and now - its my home! So come say heyyy!
